Expansion of neonatal care has reduced morbidity and mortality among newborns in China, although differences remain among various regions of the country. Efforts have focused on educational programs in neonatal asphyxia and resuscitation, expansion of neonatal emergency transportation, and research in the treatment of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy as well as neonatal respiratory and intensive care. Future challenges include expansion of clinical epidemiologic studies and clinical trials of new drugs and therapies, greater international collaboration, and wider dissemination of research findings.
